How to press DTF transfers

Written by the DTF Prints team. Last updated:

The short answer: DTF heat press settings

To press DTF transfers, set your heat press to 300°F (149°C), press for 12 to 15 seconds with medium-firm pressure (40 to 60 PSI), then peel the film. Peel hot for standard transfers and let glitter and glow in the dark transfers cool before you peel. These settings are for the transfers we print, and they apply to every fabric in the table below, including polyester.

  • Temperature. 300°F (149°C)
  • Time. 12 to 15 seconds, after a 3 to 5 second pre-press
  • Pressure. Medium-firm, 40 to 60 PSI. The press should take some effort to close.
  • Peel. Hot peel for standard transfers, cold peel for glitter and glow in the dark
  • Re-press. Optional. 10 to 15 seconds with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper on top

A heat press for DTF transfers needs adjustable temperature, time and pressure. Settings from another seller or from a DTF film maker can differ from ours, so use the instructions that came with the transfer you are pressing.

DTF heat press settings by fabric

One set of settings works for all standard DTF transfers on all fabric types. The table below shows the same settings for each fabric.

One fabric caveat applies. Some waterproof or treated performance and athletic fabrics have coatings that resist adhesion. If a transfer will not bond to one of those, contact us with photos.

How to apply DTF transfers, step by step

  1. Heat the press. Set it to 300°F (149°C). Check with an infrared thermometer that the platen reaches 300°F.
  2. Pre-press the garment. Press the empty garment for 3 to 5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
  3. Position the transfer. Lay it face down, with the printed design touching the fabric.
  4. Press. Close the press for 12 to 15 seconds with medium-firm, even pressure.
  5. Peel. For a standard transfer, remove the film while it is still warm. Pull at a steady angle, not straight up. For glitter and glow in the dark, let the transfer cool completely first (see the cold peel section below).
  6. Re-press (optional). Cover the design with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper and press for 10 to 15 seconds. This smooths the finish and removes excess adhesive powder.
  7. Let it rest. Wait 24 hours before the first wash.

If you are unsure how large to make a design, see our list of popular DTF transfer sizes.

Hot peel or cold peel

The peel type tells you when to remove the film. A hot peel means you pull the film off right after the press opens, while it is still warm. A cold peel means you wait until the film is completely cool.

Glitter and glow in the dark transfers need a cold peel. Let the transfer cool completely to room temperature before you remove the film, because peeling these hot can lift the glitter or glow particles. If your sheet came with different peel instructions, follow those, or call (386) 327-0009 before you press.

Our custom size matte transfers are listed as hot or warm peel. Hot peel gang sheets are in our gang sheet builder product.

Choosing a heat press for DTF transfers

You do not need a DTF printer to press our transfers. You need a heat press with adjustable temperature, time and pressure controls.

  • Even pressure. A household iron does not give even pressure or precise temperature control, so use a heat press you can adjust to medium-firm. Not enough pressure is the most common reason a transfer does not stick.
  • Temperature. Use an infrared thermometer to confirm the platen reaches 300°F.
  • Time control. The timer must let you set 12 to 15 seconds for the press, 3 to 5 seconds for the pre-press and 10 to 15 seconds for the re-press.

A 15 x 15 inch clamshell or swing-away heat press starts at around $200 to $300. If you only need a few shirts pressed, we can do it for you. See our shirt pressing service, which presses blanks and transfers ordered from us for $2 for the first placement and $1 for each additional one.

Common DTF pressing problems and fixes

The transfer did not stick

These are the common causes.

  1. Not enough pressure. Increase the pressure setting. The press should require some effort to close.
  2. Temperature too low. Check the platen with an infrared thermometer.
  3. Moisture in the garment. Pre-press every time.
  4. Waterproof or treated fabric. Coatings on some performance fabrics resist adhesion.

The print cracks

Cracking is usually caused by not enough heat or pressure when pressing, or by harsh washing such as hot water, bleach or high-heat drying. Re-check your temperature and pressure first, then follow the care steps below.

The print peels

A transfer that lifts after the first wash usually did not bond fully. Check pressure, temperature and pre-press first, then follow the care steps below. If it still peels, contact us with photos.

Washing and care

Transfers that are pressed correctly and cared for properly last 50 to 100+ washes without significant cracking, peeling or fading. Durability depends on the press, the washing and the quality of the garment.

  • Wait 24 hours after pressing before the first wash.
  • Wash inside out in cold water.
  • Tumble dry on medium heat or hang dry.
  • Do not bleach, and do not use fabric softener directly on the print.
  • Do not iron directly on the transfer. Use a Teflon sheet or press cloth if you need to iron nearby.
  • Do not dry clean.

Hats and hard surfaces

For hats, call (386) 327-0009 before you press. DTF is designed mainly for textiles. Adhesion on hard surfaces such as wood, ceramic mugs and phone cases varies and is not guaranteed. For hard surfaces, see our UV DTF decals.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature do you press DTF transfers at?

Press DTF transfers at 300°F (149°C). Use the same temperature on cotton, polyester and blends. Check with an infrared thermometer that the platen reaches 300°F, because a platen below 300°F is one of the common causes of a transfer that does not stick.

How long do you press a DTF transfer?

Press for 12 to 15 seconds with medium-firm pressure, which is 40 to 60 PSI. Pre-press the garment for 3 to 5 seconds first. If you re-press after peeling, use 10 to 15 seconds with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper on top.

Should I use hot peel or cold peel?

Use hot peel for standard DTF transfers. Glitter and glow in the dark transfers need a cold peel. Let the transfer cool completely to room temperature before you remove the film, because peeling these hot can lift the glitter or glow particles. If your sheet came with different peel instructions, follow those, or call (386) 327-0009 before you press.

Do I need different settings for polyester?

No. DTF transfers apply to polyester at the same 300°F (149°C) for 12 to 15 seconds, and the same settings work on all fabric types for standard DTF transfers. Some performance or athletic fabrics have coatings that resist adhesion.

Can I press a DTF transfer with a household iron?

A heat press is the better choice because it gives even pressure and exact temperature. If you must use an iron, set it to the highest cotton setting with no steam, work on a flat hard surface and press firmly for 30 to 40 seconds per area. Results vary.

When can I wash a pressed DTF transfer?

Wait 24 hours after pressing before the first wash. Then wash the garment inside out in cold water and tumble dry on medium heat or hang dry. Do not use bleach, do not put fabric softener directly on the print, do not iron directly on the transfer and do not dry clean.

Why did my DTF transfer not stick?

There are four common causes. The most common is not enough pressure, so the press should take some effort to close. The others are a platen below 300°F, moisture in the garment (pre-press to remove it) and waterproof or treated fabric. If the problem continues, contact us with photos.
